Classic Airbrush Techniques
What is the best airbrush for painting model aircraft in 1:48 scale? I want an airbrush that will be able to paint very fine, detailed patterns as well as medium spray patterns. I need a good airbrush that wont stutter and will add great detail to my work. What is the best one?
stuttering isn’t from the airbrush it’s self (unless it’s dirty) – it’s from the air source. If your compressor has no air reserve, it may tend to stutter as the air is compressed by the motor. Can’t help you with that one, other than purchasing a better compressor.
I, personally, hate the paasche VL airbrush. Someone recommended it to me years ago, and I didn’t know any better. What a tank. Not well suited for detail work AT ALL. Since then, I’ve bought a few more…and finally settled with Iwata. Love it. I have an HP-C+, a Micron cmc, and a w-101 touch up gun. I can paint anything from a tailgate to miniatures.
For more specific answers, I would suggest you drop an e-mail to Coast. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable.
my mom wont let me get one for computer modding because she doesnt think that there not for people of my age how can i convinse her to let me have one? she let me use spraypaint by myself and i tried to tell her an airbrush is just like spraypaint but she wont listen
its probably because of how much an airbrush costs and thats why she wont invest in one. you can tell her that harbor frieght sells a cheap ten dollar airbrush and you can also get a small air compressor for cheap at harbor freight as well.
I am having airbrush make up done for my wedding since I have heard how wonderful it is. However, when I went for my trial, the girl applied layers of regular liquid foundation with a foundation brush before and after applying a layer of airbrush makeup. Is this normal? I was under the impression that airbrush makeup was used alone. It seems to me that it would defeat the purpose if regular foundation was used as well. I just want to make sure I am getting what I paid for. Thank you!
Hi Heidi!
It’s difficult to say, but it sounds like what she may have been doing is concealing and covering up imperfections before airbrushing. Usually when that’s done it is for spot concealing. For instance, under your eyes for discoloration such as dark circles or maybe for spot concealing scars.
So the process goes: apply a makeup primer (clear), spot conceal with a brush (usually with a concealer product), airbrush the face and possibly the neck and shoulders.
For weddings, as you know, the makeup used with the airbrush is essentially water resistant and made to last all day. The big question in my mind is why she used the foundation afterward? Did the airbrushing leave streaks? Was the color matching off? Was the primer applied beforehand working for you and did it smooth out your pores? All those things can be potential problems.
The ideal wedding makeup should be as minimal as possible, look natural and last all day and be sweat and weather resistant. Obviously that’s nearly impossible, but you want to get as close as you can.
There’s also another consideration: Was the makeup primarily for photographs or was it for the event itself. With photographs the artist may have been looking to cover all imperfections beforehand. For the wedding the makeup can be applied with a lighter hand.
If possible have another artist apply the makeup so you can compare their techniques. The other question to ask yourself is “Did the makeup last all day?” If it looks wonderful and lasts all day, it might just be her technique. It may be that she applies the layers so lightly that it gives the effect she’s looking for. Each makeup artist is different and layering makeup works wonderfully if it’s done correctly.
The other thing to take into consideration is that the same liquid foundation that is used in the airbrush can often be applied with a foundation brush or sponge, too. Was she using the same color and just touching up?
I know these are a lot of questions to ask, but the real question is “Did you like the look?”
Hope this helps,
Shy

I want to add a little design to my bike. It has plastic fairings and a metal gas tank. I just received an airbrush and I tried it out on paper with Lacquer paint from an Aerosol spray can. What is the appropriate paint to buy for an airbrush in order to put graphics on a sport bike? I did some reading and there are 3 types of paint, Lacquer, Acrylic and, Enamel. I don’t know the difference or whats good for my airbrush.

As well as air brush itself.
I am starting an apprenticeship for airbrushing and i wanted to know what would be the best airbrush compressor and air brush for airbrushing cars?
Thanks!
I have a 150 psi compress. I use it for everything I use air for. I adjust the air pressure and have a in line moisture trap so not to damage tools or paint.
Look at the setting on your gun for what the manufacturer wants you to use and start their.
A friend and I restored a bike and I want to use my airbrush to paint it. What kind of paint do I use, does it need a primer or sealer? and where can I usually purchase it? Is airbrushing the best way to go?
what type of paint is used?
Primer is needed. Best way will be spray can. Now, if you are artistic, you could design some interesting motif on it. I hope you are not thinking about using a mouth airbrush though.

Hi,
I have been trying to find the best place to get stencils so that i can airbrush onto auto body work like motorcycles, helmets etc.
Im looking for thick stencils so that the airbrush doesnt raise the edge of the stencils to cause smeared line effects.

I want to start airbrushing and have a lot of acrylic paints. Do I need to invest in airbrush paints too.
Airbrush paint likely has a very different viscosity and dye density that makes it suitable for use with an airbrush.
